There is a small outside theatre area at the rear of the property, which local acting troops use, in particular The Earl of Oxford's Men.
The foundations of the building date back to 1196. Parts of the existing building date back to 1470 and the rest to 1595. The cobblestone carriageway is the only surviving in Stratford. William Shakespeare has documented connections with the building and is said to have based his Falstaff character on the tavern keeper.
By day the museum, which reside at the back of the private-occupied house, is Tudor World with authentically themed recreations of 16th century life.
